LEXINGTON, Ky (March 11, 2010) Three years ago, in response to the plight of abused and neglected horses across the state, the Kentucky Horse Park created the John Henry Memorial Equine Adoption Fair to provide assistance to organizations involved in rescuing them.

The John Henry Memorial Equine Adoption Fair is named in memory of the park's beloved former resident, the legendary racehorse John Henry, and will be held in partnership with the Kentucky Horse Council. The adoption fair will feature adoptable horses from several Kentucky-based equine rescue organizations, in an effort to assist these organizations in finding good homes for their rescued horses.

"Horses are the sole reason the Kentucky Horse Park exists and they have provided a living for thousands of park employees for 32 years," stated John Nicholson, executive director of the park. "We try to return the favor by improving the lives of some horses who haven't been as fortunate as the ones who live and compete at our park.

"We believe that it is very important to make a statement to the world about the priority Kentucky gives to equine welfare. This summer the nations will come to Kentucky for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. When they look at how we treat our horses, we want them to see a model that will inspire an increased level of equine care in other countries. Our adoption fair is one piece of that inspiring story."

The John Henry Memorial Equine Adoption Fair, Saturday, April 17, 11:15am to 5:00pm is open to the public. Horses may be inspected by potential adoptors beginning at 10:30am and throughout the day. There will also be a few dogs and cats available for adoption from local shelters.

Nicholson continued, "Our adoption fair may be a rather humble event, but it makes a difference in the lives of the unwanted horses who are adopted as a result. Our goal is to assist an even larger number of horses this year."

In conjunction with the adoption fair, a Happy Hour for Horses will take place in participating restaurants and bars in Central Kentucky on April 16 and 17. Proceeds will benefit the Save Our Horses fund (SOHO), administered by the Kentucky Horse Council. The SOHO fund provides financial support for food and veterinary care when an agency or county cares for a horse that has been confiscated due to its poor condition. In addition, the fund provides an Equine Abuse Investigation Class to train local officials on how to successfully identify horses that need help, and how to ensure prosecution when it is warranted.

As an added attraction, a celebrity pony named Molly, famous as one of the country's few successful equine amputees, will make appearances throughout the day. Molly was rescued during Hurricane Katrina and adopted by Kaye Harris, who operates an equine shelter in Louisiana. Molly's story has inspired people around the world, and she will be at the adoption fair to demonstrate the importance of equine rescue and adoption.

Nicholson concluded, "The Kentucky Horse Council and these equine adoption organizations are out there on the front lines every day, battling to save the animals who have made Kentucky the Horse Capital of the World. We want to come alongside them in their life-saving mission and make it a little easier for them to continue their work on behalf of horses."

For more information on the John Henry Memorial Equine Adoption Fair, go to www.KyHorsePark.com />LEXINGTON, KY (March 9, 2010) The largest and most comprehensive collection of exotic Near Eastern and Arabian equine art and artifacts ever assembled will soon be on view when A Gift from the Desert: The Art, History and Culture of the Arabian Horse is presented May 29-October 15 in the Kentucky Horse Park's International Museum of the Horse - a Smithsonian Affiliate.

A Gift from the Desert will be the first major exhibition to explore the impact of the horse on Near Eastern civilization, with particular emphasis on the Arabian, the first true breed of horse. It will concentrate on the Near East, covering the modern states of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman, Yemen, Kuwait, Bahrain, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Israel, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Algeria, Turkey, India and Iran. It will begin with the arrival of the first horses in the Near East and culminate in the spread of the Arabian breed throughout the world and the renaissance of purebred breeding in its ancestral homelands today.

This breathtaking exhibition, presented by the Saudi Arabian Equestrian Federation, will feature nearly 400 artifacts and works of art from 25 museums and private lenders including the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the British Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Oxford University, Ashmolean Museum, Carnegie Museum of Art, National Museum of Warsaw, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, American Museum of Natural History, and many others.

John Nicholson, executive director of the Kentucky Horse Park, observed, "Throughout history, horses have had a unique ability to dismantle the walls that exist between people and nations, particularly when those horses are possessed of extraordinary beauty, as are Arabians. Those who love and admire horses share a deep connection with each other regardless of age, class, race or religion. So we are very proud that the Kentucky Horse Park has developed this exhibition as a way to honor and celebrate the Arabian horse."

Among the priceless works of art and artifacts in A Gift from the Desert are the Standard of Ur (circa 2,600 BCE), the first depiction of equine driving, and the Kikkuli tablet, the world's earliest known treatise on horse care and training from the Hittite civilization.

Some items are expected to be particularly popular with equine enthusiasts, including an outstanding collection of Orientalist paintings by Delacroix, Schreyer and Fromentin; early depictions of the earliest Arabian-type horses from Egypt's New Kingdom, and a stunning selection of saddles, tack, armor and arms (many bejeweled), from the Ottoman Empire. Other pieces of interest include:

Rock drawings from            Jordan with early depictions of Arabian horses; as well as rare            depictions of horses on rock art from Arabia;

The Mleiha golden            bridle excavated from a horse burial in Sharjah, UAE;

The Abbas Pasha            Manuscript, a legendary 19th century document prepared by the            emissaries of the Viceroy of Egypt relating the history and strains            of Arabian horses;

Original sketches            by the famed cartoonist and early Arabian horse breeder Homer            Davenport, as well as original documents relating to his historic            importation of horses;

A rare book of original watercolors from the Emile Hermes collection, depicting the famous horses of the stud of the King of Wurttemburg in Germany.

This will be the third international blockbuster exhibition at the International Museum of the Horse* and is expected to draw 300,000 visitors.
Nicholson concluded, "Considering the inexpressible beauty of the Arabian horse, the rich and ancient culture surrounding it, its impact on nearly every modern breed of horse and its continued popularity around the world, it's easy to understand why we are so excited and extremely pleased and proud to offer this exhibition to the world."

Rock drawings from            Jordan with early depictions of Arabian horses; as well as rare            depictions of horses on rock art from Arabia;

The Mleiha golden            bridle excavated from a horse burial in Sharjah, UAE;

The Abbas Pasha            Manuscript, a legendary 19th century document prepared by the            emissaries of the Viceroy of Egypt relating the history and strains            of Arabian horses;

Original sketches            by the famed cartoonist and early Arabian horse breeder Homer            Davenport, as well as original documents relating to his historic            importation of horses;

A rare book of original watercolors from the Emile Hermes collection, depicting the famous horses of the stud of the King of Wurttemburg in Germany.

"These rare artifacts will be united for the first and only time in one location," said Bill Cooke, director of the International Museum of the Horse. "The story of the Arabian breed is a thread of continuity throughout the exhibition, but our art and artifacts also explore the rich and varied cultures of the peoples that treasured them and the vast contributions the ancient Near East and Arab world have made to civilization."

This will be the third international blockbuster exhibition at the International Museum of the Horse* and is expected to draw 300,000 visitors. It will be on exhibit during the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games at the park - the largest sporting event in the United States in 2010, to attend as the cultural heart of the games for hundreds of thousands of national and international visitors.

A Gift from the Desert is one of Kentucky's two biggest events in 2010, alongside the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, and one of the most prestigious art events in North America.

A total of $1,400 will be awarded in the contest, with $600 going to the winner. Registration is underway and runs through 11:59 p.m. on Friday, April 23.

This popular year-long contest returns for the 2010 racing season combined with the efforts of John Egan of Markel, who ran a similar competition for Markel in previous years.

“The 2009 Markel Freshman Sire competition was a great success and a lot of fun to organize,” Egan said. “However, by teaming up with THOROUGHBRED TIMES in 2010, this will reach a wider audience and I am excited to see the response from horse racing fans from all over the country.”

The free and interactive contest will allow entrants to create their own freshman “Stallion Barn” by choosing one freshman sire from each of six categories. Monthly and year-end prizes will be determined by the leading “Stallion Barn” in combined progeny earnings (as published by THOROUGHBRED TIMES, appearing regularly in the weekly magazine, THOROUGHBRED TIMES TODAY, and at www.thoroughbredtimes.com) on the freshman sire list.

A complete set of rules for the contest are available on the THOROUGHBRED TIMES website.

Egan and THOROUGHBRED TIMES Managing Editor Tom Law will discuss the contest, prizes, and rules during the Horse Racing Radio Network’s Equine Forum program live from Markel’s Lexington office on Saturday morning from 8 to 10 a.m. EDT. A live audio stream of the program is available at www.horseracingradio.net or locally in Lexington on WLXO 96.1 FM. A podcast of Saturday’s broadcast will also be available on the Horse Racing Radio Network website.

The contest will feature daily updates at www.thoroughbredtimes.com so players can monitor the progress of their “Stallion Barn” and track their standings against other competitors. A bimonthly update also will be provided in the daily newsletter THOROUGHBRED TIMES TODAY. This will keep track of leading contestants, update standings, identify stallions moving up and down the sire list, and profile monthly and seasonal sire leaders.

Each month from May through December, there will be a $50 cash prize awarded to the contestant whose “Stallion Barn” has earned the greatest progeny earnings for that month. In January 2011, Markel and THOROUGHBRED TIMES will announce the grand prize winners of the competition.

In addition to the $600 first-place prize, $300 will be awarded for second place, and $100 will be awarded for third place. Additionally, at the end of the contest, Markel and THOROUGHBRED TIMES will make a donation of $1,000 to charity.

For more information, contact THOROUGHBRED TIMES Managing Editor Tom Law, (859) 260-9800 or John Egan at Markel, (866) 681-6679 or jegan@markelcorp.com.

BCHA Tells You How To Make It Matter

For Additional Information Contact: Peg Greiwe
Back Country Horsemen of America
1-888-893-5161
www.backcountryhorse.com

As the leading advocate for horseback riding and stock use on public land, Back Country Horsemen of America (BCHA) continuously reviews land management agencies’ notices of rules changes, planning processes, and the like to evaluate their potential effect on our recreation.

A recent press release from the US Forest Service announced a series of events to provide opportunities for public discussion on the development of a new Forest Service Land and Resource Management Planning Rule (planning rule). The Forest Service will host a national science forum, three national roundtables and nine regional roundtables.

To the average horseback rider, this probably sounds like a real yawning, good time. While that may turn out to be the case at a particular event, this is the announcement of some of the most important meetings the USFS will hold this year, perhaps in this decade.

To help horseback riders and trail users understand how important these meetings are to their future ability to enjoy these public lands, BCHA has prepared an instructional memo that will offer advice on how to effectively comment at these meetings or online. To obtain a complete copy of this paper, go to www.backcountryhorse.com and under Current Reports on the home page, select “Comments FS Planning Rule.”

BCHA Senior Advisor for Wilderness, Recreation and Trails, Dennis Dailey noted that the “Background” statement says the rule is “needed to guide land managers” … and provide “the opportunity to help protect, reconnect, and restore national forests and national grasslands for the benefit of human communities and natural resources,” and that the rule “will allow the Agency to integrate forest restoration, watershed protection, climate resilience, wildlife conservation, the need to support vibrant local communities, …” It’s difficult to argue with that intent, but of course the “devil is in the details.”

Planning rules since 2000 have grossly neglected a very important responsibility – to provide quality recreation opportunities as required by both the Multiple-Use Sustained-Yield Act and the National Forest Management Act.

No other resource, service or product derived from Forest System lands touches the lives of more Americans nor has greater opportunity to foster citizen support than does the opportunity to choose from the variety of recreation settings necessary to enjoy a quality recreation experience.

Since the 2000 planning rule (and subsequent proposed revisions) was approved, guidance to address the recreation resource has been conspicuously absent from the planning direction. As a result, forest plan revisions that BCHA has reviewed lack a clearly defined strategy for integrating recreation into the forest’s overall activities.

Without a clearly defined strategy – including an inventory of opportunities available and assessment of future demand for those opportunities – it is impossible to determine whether proposed actions “to integrate forest restoration, watershed protection, climate resilience, wildlife conservation” will in fact “support vibrant local communities,” provide the optimum mix of recreation opportunities for the American public (which of course goes way beyond the local community), and avoid ‘unintended consequences’ such as those that BCHA has witnessed during implementation of the Travel Management Rule.

The USFS press release stated, "We encourage broad participation in the creation of our new planning rule," said USDA Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell. "Through collaboration we will be able to better address the current and future needs of the National Forest System such as restoration, protecting watersheds, addressing climate change, sustaining local economies, improving collaboration, and working across landscapes."

Following the meetings, notes will be posted on the planning rule Web site, http://www.fs.usda.gov/planningrule, to allow for further feedback. Summaries of the presentations and discussions in the science forum and roundtables, along with the individual comments received during the 60-day formal comment period on the Notice of Intent, will be used to develop the proposed rule and a draft environmental impact statement.

The meetings announced include:
National Science Forum March 29 and 30, 2010, in Washington, DC.
National roundtables April 1 and 2, April 20 and 21, and May 11 and 12, 2010, in Washington, DC. Additionally, nine regional roundtables in the following locations:
•    Pacific Northwest Region (Region 6), Portland, OR on April 6, 2010;
•    Pacific Southwest Region (Region 5),Sacramento, CA on April 6, 2010;
•    Intermountain Region (Region 4), Salt Lake City, UT on April 8, 2010;  Alaska Region (Region 10), Juneau, AK on April 13, 2010;
•    Southern Region (Region 8), Atlanta, GA during the week of April 12, 2010 (exact date to be determined);
• Eastern Region (Region 9), Chicago, IL during the week of April 28 (exact date to be determined); and
• Southwestern Region (Region 3), Albuquerque, NM on April 28, 2010.
• Region 2 will host additional meetings on April 14 in Cheyenne, WY and on April 21 meeting in Rapid City, SD.

Webcasting may also be available for selected meetings; please check the planning rule website, at http://www.fs.usda.gov/planningrule, for the most up-to-date information.

To encourage widespread participation the Forest Service is using new media tools in conjunction with the public meetings. Please visit http://blogs.usda.gov/usdablogs/planningrule to participate in the Forest Service web-based planning rule blog.

BCHA is a non-profit corporation made up of state organizations, affiliates, and at large members. Their efforts have brought about positive changes in regards to the use of horses and stock in the wilderness and public lands. If you want to know more about Back Country Horsemen of America or become a member, visit their website: www.backcountryhorse.com, call 888-893-5161, or write PO Box 1367, Graham, WA 98338-1367.

•    Pacific Northwest Region (Region 6), Portland, OR on April 6, 2010;
•    Pacific Southwest Region (Region 5),Sacramento, CA on April 6, 2010;
•    Intermountain Region (Region 4), Salt Lake City, UT on April 8, 2010;  Alaska Region (Region 10), Juneau, AK on April 13, 2010;
•    Southern Region (Region 8), Atlanta, GA during the week of April 12, 2010 (exact date to be determined);

Churchill Downs Accepts Kentucky Online Gambling Tax

From Online Casino Advisory.com

A new tax suggested for online gambling deposits made by Kentucky residents will not be fought by Churchill Downs, which already somehow is fortunate enough to accept Internet wagers despite federal and state prosecutions of competitors.

Bob Evans, president of Churchill Downs, Incorporated, said this week that his company won't resist a tax by the state of Kentucky on online gambling plays. Churchill Downs accepts Internet wagers through its TwinSpires website, even though both Kentucky and the US government are actively prosecuting Internet gambling operators and claim online betting is illegal.

Kentucky House Speaker Pro Tem Larry Clark has introduced a bill which would impose a 0.5 percent tax on deposits by Kentucky residents to accounts funding either online or telephone gambling. The tax would operate to support the state's struggling horse racing industry, with a third of revenue going to whichever track is running, a third to purses, and a third to the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission.

The bill has passed the House and is currently in the Senate. Clark says the measure, if enacted, may raise as much as $400,000 annually.

Evans stated that, while Churchill Downs doesn't like the idea of being taxed on revenue and then again on profit, it can live with this law.

“Most businesses don’t usually face both front-end and back-end taxes, but in this particular case, given that the amount is pretty small, 0.5 percent, and how those funds are then distributed, we think we can live with this one,” Evans said.

While live track handles continue to decline, online gambling sites show growth as patrons appreciate the ease and comfort of placing wagers through the Internet. Even the tangled and contorted legal thinking of the federal government and Kentucky cannot prevent the rising popularity of Internet gaming.

Louisville Committee To Plan Local Events During Equestrian Games

From Louisville Courier-Journal

Mayor Jerry Abramson has appointed a Louisville host committee to plan activities for people to participate in during the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games to be held at the Kentucky Horse Park near Lexington from Sept. 25 to Oct. 10.

The initial group has about 30 members and is similar to the host committee set up to plan activities in connection with the 2008 Ryder Cup, an international golf event at Valhalla Golf Club.

“Louisville is proud to be a partner with the World Games 2010 Foundation, Alltech, Kentucky State Government and the City of Lexington in welcoming the world to Kentucky for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games,” Abramson said in a news release.

“I feel sure that this extraordinary event will bring…guests and journalists from all over the world; thousands of hotel bookings and restaurant reservations, visits to many of Kentucky’s finest tourist attractions — benefits beyond our imagination.”

Abramson said he expects some people attending the games to stay in Louisville and visit the city’s attractions. The host committee is looking for ways to welcome the visitors — and to encourage Louisville citizens to attend the games.

The co-chairmen of the Louisville host committee are Andrew Beshear, a lawyer with Stites & Harbison, and Nana Lampton, chairwoman of Hardscuffle Inc. The other committee members include representatives of some Louisville attractions and public agencies, business and civic leaders and officials of Louisville’s hospitality and travel industry.

The World Equestrian Games will feature world championship competitions in eight equestrian disciplines.

The games are held every four years, two years prior to the Olympics.
Equine Association Leadership Training Offered by Kentucky Horse Council

  Since the weather is not conducive to outdoor equestrian activities, winter is often the time for equine organizations to conduct annual meetings, plan for the coming year, and elect officers. Associations of all breeds and disciplines look to horsemen and women to step into leadership roles by serving as directors and officers. Some elected directors have prior leadership experience while others do not. In an attempt to assuage the challenges of breaking in new leaders the Kentucky Horse Council (KHC) is offering online training for new board members and equine association officers. On March 22, 2010 the first webinar of a two part series will be held from 7-8 p.m. EST. Equine Association Leadership will be conducted by KHC Vice President and former President of the Northern Kentucky Horse Network, Anna Zinkhon. In the course of the one hour presentation Zinkhon discusses successful strategies for meeting management, working effectively with committees, engaging members, and...

Hall of Fame Jockey, Chris McCarron, Honored by Kentucky Horse Council

On a cold February evening Thoroughbred Farm Managers from around the Commonwealth converged at Keeneland Racecourse in Lexington for a regular monthly meeting of the Kentucky Thoroughbred Farm Manager’s Club. While the impact of the cold weather on the 2010 foaling season was a common thread in various conversational clusters, they experienced a few moments of respite with good food and educational presentations. The meeting commenced with a special presentation to well-known Hall of Fame Jockey and founder of the North American Racing Academy, Chris McCarron. No stranger to the lime light, McCarron served as the host of an award winning educational DVD created by the Kentucky Horse Council (KHC) last year. HorseSmarts: Essential Advice for Today’s Horse Owner was filmed on location throughout the Commonwealth in the fall of 2008. In February 2009 the film crew convened one last time in Georgetown at Cloud Nine Farm, owned by Chris McCarron, to capture footage of...

Expanding the horse owning population in Kentucky is important to the Kentucky Horse Council (KHC). Through education, the member-based non-profit encourages responsible horse ownership and management practices to build a strong and vibrant equine community. The Kentucky Horse Council is no stranger to educating new horse owners. In 2009 they released HorseSmarts: Essential Advice for Today’s Horse Owner, an award winning DVD. The sixty minute video which was shown on KET last summer and fall includes information on the top ten things new horse owners should know. The affordable DVD is available for purchase through tack and feed stores and online at http://www.kentuckyhorse.org/horsesmarts/. “First-time horse owners are often at a disadvantage as there are very few organized hands-on programs for adults to learn about horses and horsemanship skills,” observed KHC Board President, Madelyn Millard. “There is so much information available online that it can...

Horse Council Works to Demystify Green Horse Farming

If spreading manure and draining waste water onto plants is your idea of going green you may be in for a big surprise. As large scale agriculture production facilities alter their management strategies to become more environmentally conscientious the spotlight transitions to the small farmer. In an effort to provide up to date information on green equine initiatives the Kentucky Horse Council (KHC) recently added a Going Green page to the Farm & Business segment of their website. The page includes links to information and articles featuring green horse farming techniques and tactics. “Generations of horsemen having employed an array of land and stable management practices may find themselves struggling with how best to identify and utilize greener strategies. Through the Kentucky Horse Council website those individuals can network to learn about green horse farming in the Commonwealth and around the world,” observed KHC Board President Madelyn Millard. The fund is managed by the KHC Health and Welfare committee and used to support all Health & Welfare programs. SoHo funds may be used for: Funding the Equine Safety Net, which feeds horses for a month when the owner has had an...
